Car Rentals Canada - Get the best deal!
Getting the best deal on a rental car or truck is more complicated than just finding the lowest daily rates. Unexpected costs like mileage caps, insurance, and drop off fees can change the price dramatically. Putting in a little extra time for comparison shopping before renting can save you money, and future hassles.
How to get the best rate:
- Rates vary for daily, weekly, or weekend rentals. Special rates may be available for certain time periods and/or specific locations, as well as during certain holidays or seasons.
- The final price you pay may be affected by: the size and type of car you get; drop-off charges for returning the car to a different location; taxes; additional charges for extra drivers; and age of the driver(s).
- Advertised rates are not always the price you will pay. Some companies require renters to pay an additional amount for fuel, additional driver insurance, or an airport fee.
- Rental insurance may already be included in your personal insurance plan and may not be needed from the rental company. Check with your insurance agent. Also, your employer may provide insurance covering rental cars for business trips, or your credit card company or membership in certain organizations may provide rental car insurance. Call to check if you are eligible for such insurance before buying any through the rental agency.
- Many companies offer Internet discounts. When reserving online, be sure to print out or take note of your confirmation information and take this with you when you pick up the vehicle.
- When you get to the counter, ask if there are any upgrade specials available. They might have some good deals.
- Return your rental car on time. Since car rental rates run on a 24-hour clock, you will incur extra charges even if you're only an hour late in returning a vehicle. The hourly rental rate is usually one-third of the daily rate, so if you're three to four hours late, you've tacked on another day's charges to the total bill.
Other good tips to follow:
- Book early, especially if you're going to a popular place during peak travel time.
- Ask what the cancellation policy is before you provide your credit card number.
- If you plan to be a frequent renter, join a rental agency's membership club to take advantage of special offers.
When renting a vehicle, be sure to follow these practical guidelines:
- Call several companies to find out if the car you want is available and at what price. Rental companies vary widely in their prices. Make sure you are comparing similar vehicle sizes, types, locations, and dates. Try the rates at Fox Rent A Car

- Inquire about required fees such as fuel or airport fees and additional costs which may affect the price you pay. A deposit may be required if you do not have a credit card.
- Make a reservation, if possible, as unreserved rentals may cost more. Also, call to confirm your reservation to be sure the car will be available when you arrive.
- Read the contract before you sign it.
- Check the car before driving away. Be sure that any dents or scratches are noted in the contract so you won't be charged for damaging the car.
- Familarize yourself with the car's lights, windshield wipers, and radio before you pull out of the parking lot.
